Character:From Albers's pitching coach at UK Gary Henderson: “Andrew Albers is the definition of a student-athlete. He is an individual who exudes tremendous leadership capabilities both on and off the field. The University of Kentucky Athletics Department and the baseball program have benefited remarkably by his presence in the organization. Showing up every day with a position attitude and ample amounts of energy can be a challenge, but not for Andrew, who does this every single day. Andrew is from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada. It is 1700 miles and 28 hours away from Lexington, but he has managed to find a home in the Bluegrass."
Community:Albers has helped coach an elementary aged basketball team and a little league baseball team. He has volunteered for cleanup of church pot luck suppers and has given his time to work at and help organize baseball camps. He spoke to various elementary schools about the importance of staying in school and read and promoted literacy in elementary schools. He has taught PSI schools and volunteered at the Lexington Children’s Olympics as well as with the Lexington Miracle League, a baseball league devoted to handicapped children.
Competition:One of the more veteran members of the UK pitching staff, Albers has functioned as a weekend starter and closer out of the bullpen during his three-year career. He has started 30 games and appeared in 50 and is the leader amongst the pitching staff, bringing tremendous emotion and competitive energy to the mound. In his first career start, he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He has earned a 4.85 ERA in 72.1 innings of work, striking out 51 in 2007. Tallied seven saves in 2006, helping lead UK to its first ever SEC Championship, working in the role of closer.
