Classroom:Sellman has been named Academic All-Horizon League each of the past two seasons and has also been named to the Horizon League Honor Roll every semester. He holds a 3.66 GPA in integrated social studies education and his post playing goals are either teach and coach baseball or run a physical therapy center. His expected graduation date is spring 2009.
Character:Was picked by his teammates to be a captain this year, which symbolizes the leader he has been in and out of the dugout. Is one of two players to meet with every candidate who interviewed for the head coaching vacancy earlier this year. Ryan battled back from an arm injury last year to become a key member of the bullpen late in the season and has always demonstrated a great work ethic. He has served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was nominated by SAAC for Homecoming King and voted onto the Homecoming Court by the student body. He is also serving on the Horizon League SAAC for the 2007-08 academic year.
Community:Has volunteered at the Cleveland Indians Fan Day at YSU the past two years in which kids enjoy baseball-centered activities and coached a Little League team in Texas during the summer. He has worked at several baseball, basketball and golf camps as well as volunteering at a nursing home near his hometown of Twinsburg, Ohio. He has participated in numerous food and clothing drives as part of SAAC, painted houses for Habitat for Humanity, read and played with inner-city kids in Indianapolis as part of Horizon League SAAC and is currently participating in the Major League Baseball “Donate A Dream” campaign, which collects equipment for underprivileged children.
Competition:Has been a three-year mainstay at the back end of the bullpen. He collected 12 saves during his first two seasons before missing much of last season due to an arm injury. As a sophomore he collected a team-high six wins to go along with his six saves. Is ranked second in the Horizon League in saves as a sophomore and his 30 appearances set YSU’s single season record. He boasted an ERA of 2.62 in 44.2 innings and also ranked third in the Horizon League as a freshman with six saves in his 26 appearances.
