Classroom:In the classroom, Barham is a Biology major scheduled to graduate this September from the Virginia Military Institute. Following a possible career in baseball, Barham will pursue a masters degree and perhaps a doctorate in the medical field. In addition to his GPA of 2.39, Barham is a member of the VMI Corps of Cadets, rising at 6 a.m. for breakfast roll call each morning, participating in weekly parades and inspections while navigating a highly-regimented daily schedule. It should be noted that Biology is one of the most difficult disciplines offered at VMI, and his ability to maintain his coursework while participating in a taxing, 56-game baseball schedule while also juggling his military duty is to be commended.
Character:Barham has served as a team captain at VMI as both a junior and senior. He was also a part of the ministry team at Western Branch Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Va., while participating in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Greenbrier Christian Academy, his high school alma mater.
Competition:Barham is VMI's career wins leader at 18-11 entering his senior campaign. VMI sports a 23-11 record in his 34 career starts. With Barham in the weekend rotation, the Keydets have posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 1962-63 seasons, while last year saw VMI earn its first-ever national ranking. The Keydets also beat a pair of top-ten opponents on its way to a 34-win season, setting a new school-record for single-season wins for the third straight season. Barham was named National Pitcher of the Week by the NCBWA last April, working 10 innings while allowing only three baserunners in wins against VCU and Savannah State. He was also named to the Roger Clemens Award Watch List as a junior and was an All-Conference selection as a sophomore.
