Classroom:Mahler is majoring in economics, has 3.15 cumulative grade point and will graduate this spring. He was the winner of the Steve Boros Award as the top student-athlete on the U-M baseball team for 2007 despite not playing an inning during the season because of injury. He was an Academic All-Big Ten performer in 2005 and 2006 and was not eligible for 2007 conference honors due to missing season to injury. He is a three-time winner of U-M Athletic Achievement Award (2004-05, 2007), was the recipient of the Ray Fisher Scholarship for Baseball in 2007-08, the Foussianes Family Baseball Scholarship for 2006-07 and the Walter S. Harms Baseball Scholarship for 2005-06.
Character:Was selected by teammates as co-captain in 2007 and 2008. He battled back from injuries that caused him to miss entire 2007 season and allowed him to finish his career as a fifth-year senior who has moved from shortstop to second base to help the team.
Competition:Has been a member of Big Ten Championship team in 2006 & 2007, the Big Ten Playoff Champions in 2006 and the 2007 NCAA Nashville Regional Champions. He was voted captain by his teammates during fall drills and was selected co-captain by Michigan teammates for 2007 and 2008. He became a starter after taking over regular position early in the Big Ten portion of his freshman season. He enters 2008 with 140 starts (SS-239, 2B-1), has played in 159 games, has 37 career multiple-hit games (10 3-hit games, one four-hit game), has hit .333 (24-for-72) in five post-season series in his last three seasons (2004-05-06) and has 11 hits (11-for-26, .423) in six NCAA regional games in career (2005-06) [all six games in Atlanta Regional action]. He is noted for his slick glove - he led the Wolverines with 143 assists and had career-best total of 101 put outs in 2006.
