Classroom:Enters senior season with a cumulative GPA of 3.986. Had a 4.0 grade point average for both the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters. Sexton is majoring in Sport Management with a minor in Coaching. He made the Dean’s List for 2006-07 school year and had a 4.0 GPA for the Fall 2007 semester as well, making Dean’s List again. He was a two-time Southern Conference TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week. After the season, he was named to the First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III team. He is expected to graduate in May 2008.
Character:Sexton is a hard worker both on and off the field, made evident by his drive to get better and stay conditioned on the field. He thrived in the role as a Friday starter for the Catamount baseball team during last year's magical 42-win season. Despite being snubbed for All-Southern Conference honors -- where he was arguably the fifth-best pitcher in the SoCon with only four recognized -- he used it as motivation and as a building block to help his squad nearly advance through the tough Chapel Hill regional. Transferred to Western Carolina following two seasons at Campbell University.
Community:Helped the Catamount baseball team last summer and last spring with volunteering to work little league baseball camps in nearby Sylva, N.C., for the Jackson County Little League. He has worked with the community kids, serving as a role model and instructor and has also worked with the Jackson County All-Star little league baseball team. Served as a student apprentice in Western's Office of Media Relations where he contributed a student-athlete blog, as well as helped in day-to-day operations of the department.
Competition:In 2007, Sexton opened the year with six consecutive starts without a loss and ended the year with an 8-3 record in 18 appearances, 16 of those as a starter. His eight wins were good for 5th in the SoCon and he led the team with 83 strikeouts, also finishing in 5th place in the conference, and leading the team in that category. Had a season-high 11 strikeouts on March 30 in a game against the Citadel in an eight-inning win and threw his first career complete game when he shut out Appalachian State on May 4th. That same week was named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, mentioned as a "Player to Watch" by Collegiate Baseball and was listed as a candidate for Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year by PGCrosschecker.com. Named to the second team preseason All-Southern Conference by the league's head coaches Sexton currently ranks in a tie for 18th all-time in WCU history with 16 career wins entering his senior season and is 12th in games started in a career, tied for 8th in shut outs in a career, is12th in career strikeouts with 202, averaging 5.2 strikeouts per start.
