Classroom:In the classrom, Justin has shined with a 3.35 GPA in Exercise Science and will graduate in May 2008. He has been a member of the Dean's List in Fall of 2006, Spring and Fall of 2007. He won the Golden Seahawk Award with a 3.25 GPA or higher in 2006-07, the CAA Commissioner's Award in Spring of 2007. Following his graduation he will look to follow his father's footsteps and work with Civil Communications Inc., a company that maintains the communication network in rural southeastern North Carolina.
Character:Justin is a strong person from within, often choosing to lead by example and when needed by words. He has fought through several injuries during his career with the Seahawks to be a contributer in the field, on the basepaths and at the plate. He has become a teammate that is looked up to in his daily approach to his academics and playing baseball.
Community:Justin has been a contributor to the Wilmington community through several projects including Reading Rocks!, Adopt a Highway and the Wood Lot Project. Reading Rocks is a program for grammer schools in which UNCW athletes visit schools and read books to the students and then interact with them about the vaules of academics and athletics. The UNCW SAAC group picks out a mile stretch of highway road on I40 and maintains it by cleaning it every month by removing debris and garbage. The Wood Lot Project helps makes firewood for those who need it during the winter months in New Hanover County. Justin organized his own group to go to other grammer schools and introduce students to the joys of reading and learning. He also has joined with several teammates to start a Bible study group within the baseball program and is an active participant in the Baptist Student Union on campus, helping organize weekly meetings and securing speakers for the meetings. During the summer of his sophomore year, he volunteered at Wilmington Orthapaedic, helping people rehab following surgery.
Competition:Has played in 110 games in three seasons, including at least 40 in each of the last two, Barefoot owns a .261 career batting average with 66 runs scored, 17 doubles and 45 runs batted in. He scored the winning run in 2006 come-from-behind win over Virginia Commonwealth in the CAA Championship game.
